CERRO JABALCÓN

‎Geology, landscapes and cave paintings‎

Excursion 4×4 Jabalcón: € 125 for two people, each additional person € 25.00 *
The excursion that Geopark Granada proposes under the name of Cerro Jabalcón Excursion is a small journey that, in addition to its landscape aspect, will inform you about the history of the Guadix-Baza basin, an imposing territory home to one of the Geoparks of the UNESCO World Network.

A geopark is essentially a territory with a significant geological heritage, it includes a series of geological sites of relevance such as scientific quality, rarity, aesthetic or educational value. In addition to a geological heritage, there is an important link with archaeological, ecological, historical and cultural interests.

With this excursion we will help you understand and find the clues to understand how these landscapes were formed. We will talk about a sea that no longer exists, a lake that has dried up and a river that has left the old bed. All things that we can no longer see, but to make you imagine, we will follow together the traces left by the events of millions of years and we will try to convey our passion for geology and for the landscapes he has drawn. We will also add information on historical and cultural aspects, traditions and anthropization of the territory.
This relief, defined by geologists Inselberg, or isolated mountain, arose in a phase of folding of the recent Alpine orogeny (about 20-23 Ma) and consists of limestone and dolomite, rocks originating from deposits of chemical origin that settled in a salt lagoon at the time of the dinosaurs. 1448 meters high, it stands isolated and surrounded only by continental sediments.

We will take advantage of this excursion to learn about some peculiarities of the karst environment. Before starting a ring route that will allow us to visit the Falla de Baza and the Castle of Benzalema, we will make a detour to reach the highest point of this mountain that traditionally and geologically divides the Hoya de Guadix-Baza into two sub-sub-lots. We will learn to recognize a chemical sedimentary formation (with association of biogenic elements) due to hot springs and known as travertine. We will see some features of this environment and evaluate aspects that may go unnoticed.

You will visit the hot springs and we will have a drink near the old baths, now Roman and then Arab.

Our hike will pass through the Horro de la Heredad, a natural arch of karst origin, before returning to Gorafe along dirt roads.
